Stranded on an Island

Off to Nantucket

My friend Laurel wanted to go to Nantucket for her birthday, so away we went. For you non-New England folks, Nantucket is a small island 30 miles off the coast of Massachusetts. Every home on the island costs more than $1M, and people often come here to “summer,” which is a term I had not heard before moving to Boston.

Alexa and Laurel picked me up, we drove down to Hyannis from Boston, and we just barely missed the 12:30 ferry. That actually worked out well because we had the chance to explore Hyannis, which is quite a cute town, and grab a bite to eat at this little place that had seating around a big tree and next to a fire place. The food was fine, but the atmosphere was really nice to try and hold on to summer for just a little bit longer!

We took the 2:20 ferry over to the island. Here’s the obligatory arrival view.

Arriving in ACK

We hopped off the ferry and went straight to an outdoor bar just to orient ourselves and buy Laurel a birthday drink. We eventually made it to the house Laurel rented. It was perfect – nothing fancy, and everyone had a place to sleep. It was a short walk or Uber from “town,” which was nice. It was also really, really quiet.

We got dolled up and went out for Laurel’s birthday and woke up to rain and wind. Lots of serious wind. We found a bar, Met on Main, to bunker down and have some lunch and drinks and to wait for Jess’s arrival. As soon as she arrived, Laurel and I had to pop out to go see a play at the local theater. It was called Love, Loss and What I Wore. It was quite awesome, actually!

We went back to Met Bar after the play and I learned that they had canceled the ferries back to Hyannis. I was stuck on an island! I called and rescheduled for 11am on Monday and frantically called people at work to tell them I might not make it on Monday. More about that later. Once that was as settled as it could be, it was time for another beverage. We attempted to walk around but the serious wind and torrential downpour drenched us. So we watched the Pats game. Yay.

Obligatory Pats game

We went back to the house and Jess had brought a birthday cake!

After dinner we watched the presidential debate. I’ll just leave it at that. There was a lot of wine involved.

Presidential debate

After the debate we went out the last night of the Club Car with birthday hats. Clearly. I woke up to the Monday morning ferries canceled and made sure work knew I wasn’t going to be able to make it. So I made coffee.

Jess’s cousin Jared finally arrived:

Jared is classy

Jess and Jared met us at Fog Island for brunch, which made really delicious sandwiches. Then we went to the Cru end of season party and found some interesting characters and some nice views:

View from Cru

The ferries had started running, so I left Cru and went to wait stand by. The first attempt for the 4:15 ferry was a fail, but I had also put myself on the 5:15 ferry stand by list. I walked next door to Black Dog and walked out with a cross-body bag that I didn’t really need, but made the rest of the trip home much easier.

The 5:15 stand ferry was a win! I sat with this couple from Southie that had just gotten engaged. They were really nice and bought me a glass of wine. A group of three sisters joined us, and one was a Tufts Medical alumnus primary care doctor in Quincy. Someone overheard me say that I was a PA and it turned out to be one of my ultrasound instructors from school. Small world!

Back in Hyannis, the bus didn’t depart until 8:30 so I had time to kill. I sat with Eliza, an English exchange student, and her folks who were visiting from Dubai. They were lovely and made the bus ride go much faster. Finally we arrived at South Station and I grabbed an Uber Pool for the ride home. I missed work, but fortunately only one shift and I had given plenty of notice. Happy birthday, Laurel! What an adventure, as usual.
