March for SCIENCE!

Writer's picture: LaineLaine

My lovely Aunt Heather was visiting the DC area to see how her aunt was doing, and I had the pleasure of hosting her for a few days. After the many times she and Joe have graciously hosted me in LA, I was happy to return the favor and spend time together. Conveniently, the March for Science was also this weekend!

As a hostess gift she brought me these adorable "Women in Science" postcards! I love them, and they still adorn my end table in my living room.

It was a rainy travel day and Heather got in kind of late, so we had a low key evening. Heather and Joe are fantastic cooks and we have shared many delicious, homemade meals together, so we made a Blue Apron dinner that turned out pretty well. Both of us are huge Blue Apron fans!

Saturday we had brunch at Busboys and Poets in Shirlington, and my brother and his girlfriend joined us. I love Busboys and Poets - it's one of my favorite places to take guests. They have great farm to table food, food for everyone's dietary restrictions (and MEAT!), and delicious cocktails. Plus, they have a bookstore at the entrance and a homey feel. It's a win.

After brunch we headed downtown for the March for Science... in the rain! There were some seriously great signs.

Here I am with my lil' bro!

After the march we went to Lost Dog to grab a beer and escape the rain. While we were there I ran into C-Rod, a friend of mine from college whom I hadn't seen since college. He lives down the street. Small world

My brother had to jet, so I took Aunt Healther to Abi's for dinner. Abi's is this divey, hole-in-the-wall Mexican place across the street from my apartment, tucked into a little shopping plaza behind a 7-11. It's unassuming but the menu is enormous, the food is delicious, everyone there is so nice and there is sangria as big as your head!

Sunday morning we lounged and made a lazy breakfast with some veggies from the farmer's market and local fresh eggs that I get from one of my coworkers.

After breakfast we scooted down to Alexandria to check out the Torpedo Factory Artist Studios and Gallery. If you have not been there, go. It's free and you can wander around this literally old torpedo factory that has been converted to artist studios and check everything out. The building is incredible and it's conveniently right on the Alexandria waterfront, so it's in the middle of everything.

We the people

It was still a bit rainy so we spent some time with the windows open listening to the rain and some reggae music while we read. We finished off with Heather and Joe's traditional "Pasta Sunday," which seemed like a perfect end to Heather's visit. Then Monday, off she went!
